South African Tinned Fish Chutney

A nostalgic Durban-style tomato chutney simmered with tinned fish, green chillies, curry leaves, and thyme, finished with fresh lemon.

This tinned fish chutney is pure nostalgia. It’s the way my mum has always made it, and it’s one of those comforting, humble pantry meals that never disappoints. Flaky canned mackerel or pilchards simmered into a spicy, jammy tomato, garlic, and curry leaf gravy, best scooped up with steaming Durban roti or soft white bread.

Ivana Sanshia’s note

Be gentle when stirring the fish into the chutney! Keeping chunky flakes of fish gives the dish an appealing texture rather than turning mushy.

Mum’s note

Never skip the squeeze of fresh lemon juice right at the end! The bright citrus acid completely cuts through the natural oily richness of tinned fish and lifts the entire tomato chutney.
